To DIY or NOT to DIY?

Have you ever wanted something so bad that you convince yourself that it would be cheaper {and easy} to just make it yourself...?

You decide, YES, it would be!

So you start DIYing...only to get halfway through the project to find that not only have you spent hours and hours and hours working and you are STILL not done AND you've actually spent mass amounts of dough...sometimes, more dough than the original item/service would have cost you!!!

If you are anything like me, then you are shaking your head in agreement right now!!!
And probably sighing...heavily!

I can't tell you how much time and money I have wasted doing this...
BUT NOT NO MORE!!!
{I know...bad grammar...shoot me!}

Now...I go through this very simple decision tree BEFORE diving into a DYI project.
What's a decision tree you ask?  Well, it's a flowchart basically...or a diagram...used to determine a course of action and possible results and/or consequences stemming from that particular action.
Here...it's probably just easier to show you MY DIY Decision Tree Diagram...
{you know I was going to show it to you anyways right...}

More often than not...it is a DIY'er!

Wicked Chickens Make Deviled Eggs {FREE Printable}

So I have a Rooster / Chicken theme going on in my kitchen...mostly Rooster
{YES there is a story behind WHY there is a massive collection of Roosters le coqs in my kitchen...}

So you can imagine how delighted I was when I saw this FREE Printable at Clumsy Crafter!

I of course just HAD to print this one out and put in my kitchen!
If you'd like one for yourself, pop on over and download it HERE.

To give the frame a more 'rustic' look, I simply cut a strip of burlap, glued it to the back and tied a bow.
{I had tons left from my DIY Burlap Wreath}

TIP ~ A hot glue gun and burlap mesh well together!!!

What do you think?

Are you dying to know WHY I have this many Roosters in my kitchen?!?

Well...you remember Boo~Bear?!?
When he doesn't get his way...basically, when I do what I want despite what he tells me to do...
Well...when that happens...he puffs up his chest, deepens his voice and says...
'Now lookie here HEN!  I am the ROOSTER of this HEN HOUSE!'
At which point I break out in laughter and his temper tantrum is permanently interrupted...

And THAT is WHY I have a ton of ROOSTERS in my kitchen!

Note to self
MUST paint those little screw cover ups black to match the rest of the shelf AND change the ribbon on the two DEVILED EGGS pics to burlap....gotta be matchy matchy!!!

Also thinking that I should just start calling the kidlets Deviled Egg #1 and Deviled Egg #2...hmmm!?!

DIY Ice-Pops!!!

I was SO excited when I came across this product!
Do you really need to ask WHY I was so excited?  REALLY?!?

I mean what could be better than ziploc style bags designed for making your own ice-pops!?!
Uh...pretty much NOTHING!!!

{source}

Zipzicle by WizCo are zip-top ice pop bags that allow you to make your very own ice-pops.  BUT...there's a bonus...the top zips closed so if you only want to eat half, you can zip it closed, put it back in the freezer, and eat it later!
GENIUS!!!
If that wasn't enough...you can add whatever ingredients you want...not just water, food coloring and sugar!  Again...GENIUS!!!

And, yes, all I keep saying to myself is...

I, of course, immediately ordered some...5 packs of 12 {$2.99 each - order HERE} to be exact!

It was like Christmas in June when they arrived!

We immediately put them to the test...and let me tell you what!

They were...

Kool~Aid Pops!
Now Zipzicle has quite a few DE-LISH recipes on their site...but frankly, I was craving Kool~Aid!

Kool~Aid is a staple in my house!  Everyone loves it!  So...of course, I naturally thought to try these!
Simply make your Kool~Aid like you normally would, pour into pouches, freeze, and enjoy!

To start...round up your supplies!

I used a frosting bag for my funnel...WHAT?!?  It's called improvising!

I cut the tip from the bag and folded the top over so it was easier to handle, pinched the top of the Zipzicle bag open...like so...

I then poured my Kool~Aid into the funnel.
Sorry...I couldn't get a picture of this.  I only have two hands ya know...

I noticed that you actually have to fill it up just below the Fill Line.  If you go all the way to the Fill Line and then zip the bag closed, the juice goes above the Fill Line.  Not sure this matters though...

I put all my filled Zipzicles in my handy dandy tall plastic container ~ you want them upright!

Place them in the freezer and let sit until frozen.  We left ours in for about 24 hours.
And as I predicted...they were a HIT!!!

Okay...so here are some more digs on this product...

Important Facts

 * BPA FREE
* Recyclable
* 100% virgin plastic
* Contains NO plastizers
* Can be re-used if properly cared for
* Product Satisfaction is GUARANTEED!!

Tips

*Soda / carbonated liquids expand upon freezing.  Be sure to leave sufficient empty space when using carbonated liquids.
* Don't go over the 'Fill' line when filling your pops.
*Use a funnel or baster to fill pops.
* Store pops upright in a mug/container when in the freezer.
* Once pops are frozen, you can put them on ice {in a cooler} and they are good to go!

* You determine the amount of ice-pops you want to make...

1 c filling = 3 Zipzicle™ ice-pops
2 c filling = 6 Zipzicle™ ice-pops
3 c filling = 9 Zipzicle™ ice-pops
4 c filling = 12 Zipzicle™ ice-pops

All in all, I was VERY impressed with this product!  It's a fun, easy way to enjoy a family favorite tradition without all the unnecessary sugar and food coloring that traditional ice-pops offer!
 Zipzicle™ is now a kitchen staple in my household!

Ruffly Felt Americana Wreath {'Gettin' Our Craft On' Group Craft for June '13}

I'm super duper thrilled with what my Gettin' Our Craft On group made this month!!!
We were inspired by the Ruffly Patriotic Wreath from Capital B!

To make one of your own, you'll need approximately 1/2 yard of red, white and blue felt.
Cut your squares at 2 inches by 2 inches.

Now...I know what you are thinking...THAT IS A LOT OF FELT!
I know...I know...I got a bit overzealous and I cute 2 whole yards of each color.
Think of it this way...I have A TON of leftovers for future wreaths!!!

You'll also need a 12" or 14" wreath form...not the styrofoam kind.

I'm pretty much a control freak so I had to draw my sections onto my wreath...I even marked them with B (for blue), R (for red), and W (for...you guessed it...white)!

Now comes the pinning...

We used a No.2 pencil to wrap our wire around (we cut our wire at 10")

We glued out stars (which were simply punched out of white cardstock) onto the wire as directed in Capital B's tutorial...let it dry for a second and stuck the 'firework' stars into the blue section...

Needless to say...it was a fun night!!!

DIY Elastic Hair Ties

YES!  I KNOW!
Tutorials for these are ALL OVER the place!

But none have been written by moi...therefore, they are irrelevant {{wink wink}}...

I warned you that I was going to do this in my 'Here's the thing...' post!
Ya know...post what I want even if it's been done before!

So...here is MY version of the DIY Elastic Hair Tie tute!

First things first...I got my 5/8" Satin Foldover Elastic from Elastic By The Yard.  They have a great selection of colors and their prices are unbeatable...IMO!  It was a happy day when my order arrived...

SEE!  The pic even says Oh Happy Day...

Okay then...whip out your measuring tape...

...and cut at 9.5 inches.
I've seen tons of tutorials instruct cutting at 8", 8.5" and 9"...but I found that 9.5 inches worked best!

Fold in half and tie in a knot...make it tight!!!

Now...this is the tricky part...mainly it's just tricky to try to do this AND take a picture at the same time!

Take a lighter to the edges...so that the hair tie doesn't fray!

And guess what?!?
YOU ARE DONE!
Yup!  That's it!  It's that easy!!!

You can then slip them onto some cardstock for easy gift giving...
or throw em' in a mason jar for easy storage!
